Japanese Arts Center, Ryu Shu Kan Ikebana - Japanese Flower Arranging Life Skills- Other,
Multicultural- Other,
Nature- Gardening
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is more than simply putting flowers in a container. It is a disciplined art form in which the arrangement is a living thing where nature and humanity are brought together. It is steeped in the philosophy of developing closeness with nature. Join Hiroko & Gerard Senese, from the Japan Center at Stony Brook University for a demonstration of the different styles of Japanese flower arrangements. Hiroko Uraga-Senese studied Ikebana in Osaka, Japan in the prestigious Misho-Ryu style of Ikebana, which was established over 200 years ago. She received her Shihan-Teacher's License in 1980 and has been introducing Ikebana to the Long Island community since 1998. Learn about the history, concepts, principles and aesthetics behind each arrangement, and the relationship of the flowers to each particular vase being used.

Sprague, Lindsay (Lynn) Biophere Projects! Growing Food on Mars and Beyond! Life Skills- Food,
Nature- Gardening,
Science
In the late 1980's, scientists began hypothesizing about growing food in space in preparation for the international space station and colonizing other planets. Biospheres were built and humans volunteered to live in them for 1-3 years at a time to mimic missions to other planets. Scientists studied nutrient requirements of plants, interpersonal relationships between participants, and environmental controls within these closed systems to explore scenarios astronauts might face when colonizing new planets. In this program, the library will build and host its own biosphere so students can learn about these closed systems in real time, and conduct experiments as if they were in space.
