Carpenter, Margot Were They Equal? - an African story as told by Dr. Arnold Perey Literature- Other,
Multicultural- Other,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
"Were They Equal?" is a delightful story from Africa, about Tortoise, Elephant, Hippo, & You! Arnold Perey, anthropologist, in this illustrated children's book, has retold the story for children today, and illustrated it with lively pictures. He is joined by flutist Barbara Allen, and actor Anne Fielding in the telling of the story. You'll hear about Tortoise, who is small. The big animals, Elephant and Hippo, feel important because they think they are better than Tortoise. But Tortoise plays an amazing trick on them which helps them see the truth: "We are different, but our feelings inside are the same. I deserve the same respect that you do."

I emphasize the pleasure I have in writing AND in re-writing. I show the entire process from my very rough drafts to galleys to the actual press sheet from the printing press. My aim is to communicate and make contagious the pleasure & power I get as a writer/detective, using my 5 senses to record the world.

Fiske, David Rescued from Slavery: The Story of Solomon Northup History,
Literature- Authors,
Multicultural- Other
Solomon Northup was a free black man living in New York State. In 1841 he was lured away from home and sold as a slave. For nearly twelve years, he was a slave in Louisiana. Finally he was able to get a message to friends in New York, and he was able to return home as a free man. After writing a book about his experiences, he traveled around the Northeast giving speeches, and even helped fugitive slaves get to Canada thanks to his work on the Underground Railroad. Mr. Fiske wrote Solomon Northup: His Life Before and After Slavery, and is a co-author of Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave. This is a great Black History topic!

Discover the Magic of Reading! can fill your library with thrilled children happily participating in the most amazing program they’ve ever seen! Children LOVE the magic, parents LOVE the positive messages, and Library directors LOVE the resulting increased book circulation!... The show combines amazing magic, lots of audience participation, age appropriate humor, storytelling with reading promotion, a magical game and typically a breathtaking musical routine with mesmerizing special effects! For slightly larger budgets, we can add spectacular illusion(s), such as, floating a child in the air, sawing somebody in half or making them magically appear to introduce the show. Children also go crazy for an incredible animated talking picture! This is an incredibly easy, fun way to hook kids into reading, and get them excited about your Summer Reading Club for example! Not just reading, but checking out & reading both fiction and non-fiction books. At the end of this exciting adventure I typically give the children a list of topics discussed and popular with youngsters, with their associated Dewey Decimal System Numbers! How many programs get kids to actively learn and use the Dewey Decimal System? Make your library glad!
