Short courses in the background of places in the headlines: learn about the history, politics, economics, and culture of countries in crisis and rising powers. Each one and a half hour class session will cover a different country. In keeping with public libraries’ educational mission, the objective of the series is to equip citizens with the information needed to understand news coverage (or lack thereof) as well as to evaluate U.S. policy and policymakers. Guest speakers for question-and-answer sessions will be introduced as available/appropriate. Countries in the series will include North Korea, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, India, and China. (Sessions on other countries can be developed on request.) Special attention will be paid to explaining the aims and impact of U.S. policies vis-à-vis other countries: executive agency actions, federal legislation, and local impact here on Long Island. Perfect for current events discussion groups!
