Fiske, David Rescued from Slavery: The Story of Solomon Northup History,
Literature- Authors,

Solomon Northup was a free black man living in New York State. In 1841 he was lured away from home and sold as a slave. For nearly twelve years, he was a slave in Louisiana. Finally he was able to get a message to friends in New York, and he was able to return home as a free man. After writing a book about his experiences, he traveled around the Northeast giving speeches, and even helped fugitive slaves get to Canada thanks to his work on the Underground Railroad. Mr. Fiske wrote Solomon Northup: His Life Before and After Slavery, and is a co-author of Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave. This is a great Black History topic!

A musical play of the old folk tale which answers the question, Is it possible to make a soup from just a stone? This version concerns a soldier who comes upon a small village of very selfish people. When no one offers to give him something to eat, the soldier uses his wits to amaze them all with a pot of boiling water and, yes, just a stone. This is a story about friendship, trust and self-reliance - three issues that couldn't be more important in today's world.

Bromka, Sondra & John The Tale of Tristan & Iseult: An Arthurian Legend Literature- Other,
Music,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
This most famous of all classic love stories was originally set in Celtic antiquity, and an important component of the Arthurian legends. In the 12th century, the tale was already 600 years old when it captured the imagination of Medieval France’s famous storyteller-poet-musicians, the troubadours. The powerful story continued its long journey through the ages... inspiring many works in turn, including Shakespeare (Romeo & Juliet). Bells & Motley present a telling that is authentic, yet lively, accessible, highly charged, and mysterious - full of all of the original symbolism, intrigue, and purpose. In ancient bardic style, it features a simple setting, rich language, and complex emotions evoked through the power of music. Rare historic instruments include the Medieval keyed fiddle, low-voiced recorders, ancient gut-strung bray harp, and Celtic harp. Musical selections include the same historic pieces that were part of Medieval tellings, as inspired by this enduring tale.
$351- $500
Edgecomb, Diane A Celtic Evening Literature- Other,
Multicultural- Other,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
Irish Culture comes to life with Storytelling, Song and the strains of the Celtic harp. In A Celtic Evening, Diane brings to life Ireland’s storytelling treasures from the humorous Legend of Knockgrafton to the hauntingly beautiful Deirdre of the Sorrows. The most famous of all Irish romances, Deirdre weaves together Druidic prophecies with a forbidden passion so profound it dares to defy the fates. The performance is set against a lush background of harp music: original and traditional melodies played by the versatile Margot Chamberlain on a variety of Celtic folk harps. Enjoy an evening of humor, passion and music with these two inspiring performers. A Celtic Evening is also available as a full musical event with the addition of Michael Punzak on story and fiddle and Tom Megan on accordion, keyboard and pennywhistle. Thoughtfully composed and beautifully presented, A Celtic Evening was a joy for us all. The combination of both your talents made for an inspirational evening that moved the audience to laughter and to tears, and left us with a feeling that magic was in the air. Mahoney, Daniel Writing with Pictures Workshop Literature- Authors,
Performing Arts- Literary Artists,
Visual Arts- Drawing
In my program the students learn the nuts and bolts of picture book making, from what the jacket's job is to how and why I choose the illustrations for a particular manuscript I'm working on. I share with the children everything I utilize while creating a picture book : rough sketches, story board, dummy book, and final artwork that actually goes in the book, as well the art I created that didn't make it in. Then the students become the authors as I illustrate the story they conjour up in a round robin storytelling session. I sketch it all out on a large pad of paper, then the students get to keep my art to make up stories of their own!
