Laura Ingalls Day is a compilation of programs normally taught in a 1 hour block, designed for a kickoff or finale to summer reading, or an event that will bring in patrons during the winter. Starting with sugaring off, we will make sugar on snow, then move onto fresh butter, cheese, and sourdough bread. Next we will plant a garden on the library grounds or start transplants for growing on the windowsill. We can wash up with home made old fashioned lye soap, and hand dip candles. Wrap it all up by meeting farm animals and learning to care for them just like Laura and Mary. Based on book: Little House in the Big Woods, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this program can incorporate reading the book and eating between stations. The program can last 4-8 hours, depending on age group and individual or combinations of stations.

Visual Arts- Painting
Christopher Agostino’s StoryFaces is a very different kind of a show. Audience volunteers are brought on to the stage and facepainted very quickly to illustrate the stories he tells. The amazing facepainting holds kids attention while they listen to folktales from around the world and his original tales. With his extensive repertoire of stories he can perform successfully for any size audience and any age: kids, teens and adults. In most shows he paints 8 to 12 volunteers while mesmerizing the audience with a theatrical storytelling style and tales that range from the comic adventure of the first time a man met a crocodile to the heroic tale of the boy Punia and the King of the Sharks. Spoken word and painted faces combine in a unique performance art, as author and artist Christopher Agostino illuminates ancient traditions to completely engage modern audiences. It’s surprising and delightful theater for any age. Several themes are available and special shows can be crafted to feature specific cultures and special topics. Discounts available for libraries on certain dates. Go to agostinoarts.com to see the new video: What Is A StoryFace?

Davis, Katie Novel and picture book Author-Illustrator Visit! Literature- Creative Writing,
Performing Arts- Literary Artists,
Visual Arts- Drawing
Beginning: How to draw great characters, brainstorm, and create a ‘voice’ for characters. Middle: Kids interactively establish plot, setting, and conflict. End: Children edit and re-write the story and create a resolution! Assemblies: Katie teaches story construction, sequencing, how ideas transform from thought to published book. Kids learn to do drawings of emotions, Katie shares her mistakes, and teaches skills students can use when creating their own stories. K-3: Highly interactive: children help write a story; volunteers make different emotional expressions. Katie draws their faces on the characters and together they create a new narrative with emphasis on beginning, middle and end. 4-6: Workshops: brainstorming, plotting, descriptive narrative, and character development. Illustration: teaches kids HOW TO SEE so they’re able to illustrate any story they write. Dear Katie, I'm usually 'ho-hum' when it comes to author visits. You were one to change my mind! You were...the best ever writing session, and I truly mean it! Jayne Pitt, K teacher
