How did forensic archeologists from the British Museum use 2,000-year-old artifacts to solve a murder in an English bog? Let World History Through Crafts take you back to the Iron Age, when Celtic warriors (including the fearsome Queen Boudicca) and secretive Druid priests ruled half of Europe. Learn how scientists use clues from the past to uncover the details of Celtic life, including their famous weapons and jewelry, and make your own replicas of Celtic shields, brooches, arm bands and necklaces. The World History Through Crafts Celtic Metalwork workshop will entice young library-goers with a thoroughly gruesome mystery and send them home with authentic-looking crafts they made themselves. Best of all, they’ll be introduced to lots of fun and fascinating children’s books on Ancient Britain, the Roman Empire, bog bodies, and archeology, including the DK classic A Street Through Time and David Macauley's hilarious Motel of the Mysteries.

Ceceri, Kathy World History Through Crafts History,
Multicultural- Other,
Visual Arts- Crafts
Travel to different times and places around the world and explore the artifacts of the people who lived there -- then make some of your own! Crafts like Buddhist Sand Mandalas from Tibet, sacred stone Inuksuit from the Arctic, and Huichol Yarn Paintings from Mexico are not only beautiful, they also provide clues about their creators’ culture, landscape, technology and social systems. Participants will learn about a different society through their artwork and make an authentic-looking craft to take home. Each workshop begins by talking about the history of the craft and the culture that produced it, using books, photographs, websites (on my laptop if necessary), or actual examples if possible. The rest of the time will be spent making the craft. In addition to their projects, participants get a handout with information about the craft, directions for making it at home, a list of resources for further exploration, and fun paper-and-pencil games and activites. Program is suitable for family, teen and adult workshops as well as for elementary-age children.
