The Great Space Race History,
Nature- Other,
Science
This program utilizes a floor size game format to learn about space and to explore the many components of what makes up the universe. It is suitable for young children and fosters curiosity about constellations, planets, and galaxies. A portion of the program is devoted to the history of the race to space between Russia and the United States, and where we are today in NASA development. To book this program, please add yourself to the spreadsheet below on your desired date and time. 1.) Please note anyone else who has booked that day and the distance between libraries. Please attempt to book with other libraries in your system for discounts on programs and mileage. 2.) Times on the spreadsheet are suggestions, if my next library is ten minutes away from yours and you have willing workers to help clean up, then you may alter the times to suit your schedule. 3.) Please fill out the contact information completely by scrolling right on the spreadsheet so I do not travel to the wrong state. Biophere Projects! Growing Food on Mars and Beyond! Life Skills- Food,
Nature- Gardening,
Science
In the late 1980's, scientists began hypothesizing about growing food in space in preparation for the international space station and colonizing other planets. Biospheres were built and humans volunteered to live in them for 1-3 years at a time to mimic missions to other planets. Scientists studied nutrient requirements of plants, interpersonal relationships between participants, and environmental controls within these closed systems to explore scenarios astronauts might face when colonizing new planets. In this program, the library will build and host its own biosphere so students can learn about these closed systems in real time, and conduct experiments as if they were in space. To book this program, please add yourself to the spreadsheet below on your desired date and time. 1.) Please note the distance between libraries. Please attempt to book with other libraries in your system. 2.) Times on the spreadsheet are suggestions, you may alter the times to suit your schedule. 3.) Dancing With Horses Music,
Nature- Animals,
Performing Arts- Dance
This program is an introduction to the art of dressage, as performed by the Spanish Riding School and Lippizaner Stallions of Austria. Participants will learn dance moves that mimick the moves of the horses, and can practice them in a simulated dressage arena. They will learn moves such as the side pass, pirouette, flying changes, piaffe and passage. The history of the art will be taught using Margeurite Henry's book: The White Stallion of Lippiza. Students will be allowed to perform a KUR using classical music at the end of the program. Dressage is the art of teaching horses to dance in harmony with themselves. It was originally developed by the Greek General Xenophon, as a means to train horses for war. Today it is performed both as an Olympic sport in the summer games and by those who wish to train their horses in the higher arts. The class will be conducted as a ballet class in a flat open area of the library. This program is suitable for the 2019 summer reading program.

Bioshock! Neuroscience for Everyone Health & Fitness- Other,
Nature- Other,
Science
This course is taught with a lecture and lab component. During lecture, students learn about the organization of the nervous system, synaptic transmission, neurotransmitters, and ionic basis for action potentials. These are basic foundations for the science of neurophysiology, which we will be practicing using hands on methods. The lab component involves recording action potentials in real time from an insect, and analysis of the recording to interpret results. Robotic control of an insect using neural circuits and a cell phone usually interest the most hard core bored students! The goal of the class is to interest students in neural circuits and neuroscience! This program is suitable for the 2019 summer reading program.

Life Size Solar System - A Walk Through Exhibit Media- Other,
Nature- Other,
Science
Full immersion walk through of our solar system for all ages! Spiral into the solar system on a glow in the dark path past scalar size planets with their moons, read about their discovery and the elements that they are made of at each planet. Dodge asteroids as you spiral out and learn about constellations and comets too! This program will inspire young and old alike to learn more about what science is doing to explore our solar system. To book this program, please add yourself to the spreadsheet below on your desired date and time. 1.) Please note anyone else who has booked that day and the distance between libraries. Butterfly Metamorphosis Observation Solarium Nature- Animals,
Nature- Environment,
Science
A large, library grade, decorative table/desk set solarium will be set up in a public location within the library. It will contain host plants, butterfly eggs, and patrons will be encouraged to return to the library regularly ro view the progress of caterpillars, chrysalis hatching, and butterflies within the solarium. This can be replenished as often as desired throughout the season, with the understanding that it takes 5-7 weeks for the life cycle to be complete. The library may choose to keep the solarium for future use or return it at the end of the season for a rebate.

Butterfly Release Nature- Animals,
Nature- Gardening,
Visual Arts- Crafts
Everyone loves butterflies, especially up close and personal. They are a medium that unlocks the heart of angry teenagers, and are able to coax the shyest of children out of their shells. When there is a butterfly release in town, people literally drop everything to attend. The day of the event students learn how to identify host and nectar plants, what Monarch eggs, larvae, and pupal forms look like; how to tell a male from female and why the males have pheromone pouches on their wings. There is much discussion on native butterflies in NY and identifying specimens patrons have observed. Releases attract the attention of the local media, and are great publicity. I have Monarch, Painted Lady, Mourning Cloak, Eastern Black Swallowtail, and Red Admiral Butterflies this season. Wild-caught displays (not always available) might include Eastern Tailed Blue, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Clouded Sulphur, Cabbage White, White Admiral, and Baltimore Checkerspot. At the end of the program the butterflies are released either individually or as a group. This program is suitable for the 2019 Summer Reading Program.

Horses 101 Health & Fitness- Sports,
Life Skills- Other,
Nature- Animals
Welcome to the world of horses! Children and adults alike are fascinated by these majestic creatures, and the experiences with them can be magical! Spending time around horses and ponies has been proven in many studies to be therapeutic on many levels both physically and emotionally. The bond can be quite powerful and healing, but where to start? It is important to know the nature of a horse, how to properly handle them on the ground as well as while riding. Proper care and feeding, tack fitting, and maintenance will be discussed as well. This is all taught out of the American Association for Horsemanship Safety manual by Jan Dawson. Katie, our real life miniature horse will be available to be pet, groomed, and for demonstration of safety techniques. This program is suitable for the 2019 summer reading program.
