| Novel and picture book Author-Illustrator Visit! |
Literature- Creative Writing, Performing Arts- Literary Artists, Visual Arts- Drawing |
Beginning: How to draw great characters, brainstorm, and create a ‘voice’ for characters.
Middle: Kids interactively establish plot, setting, and conflict.
End: Children edit and re-write the story and create a resolution!
Assemblies: Katie teaches story construction, sequencing, how ideas transform from thought to published book. Kids learn to do drawings of emotions, Katie shares her mistakes, and teaches skills students can use when creating their own stories.
K-3: Highly interactive: children help write a story; volunteers make different emotional expressions. Katie draws their faces on the characters and together they create a new narrative with emphasis on beginning, middle and end.
4-6: Workshops: brainstorming, plotting, descriptive narrative, and character development. Illustration: teaches kids HOW TO SEE so they’re able to illustrate any story they write.
Dear Katie, I'm usually 'ho-hum' when it comes to author visits. You were one to change my mind! You were...the best ever writing session, and I truly mean it!
