Herscovitch, Lara Workshop - Waging Love: Finding & Amplifying Your Voice for a Better World Life Skills- Other,
Music,
Other
(Women Waging Love: same workshop with female-only participants) The many challenges of our world can feel overwhelming. Every one of us has knowledge and skills that can help build healthier communities, but we don’t always know where to start or how to plug in. This engaging, interactive workshop is like a visit to an artistic and inspiring civic engagement coach. It is designed for people who want to build a personal road map in a safe, respectful space with some guidance and in connection with others. Through individual writing and reflection, compelling exercises, group discussion, and live and recorded music, we will cover: individual values, priorities and hopes; debunking the myths of a perfect solution and single charismatic leader; accepting, carrying and passing on a torch; letting one’s heart lead (not one’s ego); allowing for the messiness of collaboration; appreciating common threads as well as differences; and specific strategies and places to wage love in the civic arena. Step in, step up: we are the leaders we’ve been waiting for.

McGrath, Cathy “THE HEART OF AMERICAN MUSIC” 19th century songs of our heritage History,
Music,
Other
Based on research done for music for the Genesee Country Village & Museum with Flint Hill Folk, Cathy McGrath presents a program of nineteenth century heritage music in authentic period dress and with instruments appropriate to the era. The audience is encouraged to participate by singing their hearts out! Songs are chosen from two books which were collections compiled from thousands of people who sent in their favorite songs of the previous century. From Heart Songs (1909): “Each song recalls to the individual reader some tender, sad, joyous or martial association.” From Songs That Never Grow Old (1903): “A collection of old-time songs that have long been tried and forever loved.” Songs of all sorts of categories are presented - love, home, Erie Canal, historic, patriotic, dancing, popular and folk songs - and represent a valuable gauge to the popular taste in music at that time. These melodies are part of our collective past, yet still resonate today. An experienced folk music performer, Cathy uses an 1870’s guitar, limberjack puppets, antique flute, and rolled tin whistle in this historical program and encourages audience participation.
