NY, NY: Urban Gems to Explore Museums,
Performing Arts- Other
What makes New York City so exciting, so alluring? No matter how many times you visit, or even if you’ve lived there for a lifetime, New York City’s five boroughs provide a never-ending source of new discoveries. In a city of over 8 million people, 200 nationalities, hundreds of museums, parks and historic sites, and thousands of restaurants, the possibilities for surprise and delight are endless! We’ll explore in-depth several favorites from a new perspective and discover new, exciting and often underappreciated urban gems. And, of course, wherever we “go”, we’ll find the best foods and places to eat. You’ll leave with comprehensive handouts and most likely a prize or two! Power-point presentation.
$201- $350
In the Footsteps of Ruth Life Skills- Food,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
Come with me on a unique adventure that's part of New York City's culinary history! Ruth Reichl was the NY Times food critic from 1993-1999, famous for her “populist” reviews of restaurants that everyone could enjoy and afford. Previous Times reviewers had focused on the stuffy, expensive high-end restaurants, but Ruth changed all that! Of the almost 400 restaurants that she reviewed, over 75 are still in business almost twenty years later! In this workshop, with foreknowledge of her (often very funny) reviews, we will walk in Ruth's footsteps to “visit” seven of them. We'll examine what has changed and what remains the same. Then we'll explore the neighborhoods of each, visiting familiar landmarks and discovering off-the-beaten-path attractions, such as rooftop bars and unusual museums, special interest tours and more. You will leave with seven all-day itineraries, seven Ruth Reichl restaurant reviews, and most likely, several prizes! 1 ½ hours. 21 prizes. Handouts

All the Little Italys Multicultural- Other,
Other,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
When it comes to celebrating, don’t we each have a little Italian in us? Why not celebrate your “inner Italian” with a trip to Italy right here in New York! Between 1880 and 1920, over four million Italians entered the United States. Learn how those who settled in New York’s neighborhoods made their cultural imprint on the city. With four Little Italys to visit in New York’s boroughs, there’s plenty to see and do. We’ll take a “tour” through each one, with an in-depth look at attractions, restaurants, markets, bakeries, shops; all that makes them uniquely Italian. Plus, we’ll “tour” another Little Italy in a city only two hours from New York. Complete itineraries, thorough information about each neighborhood and directions for car/public transportation/parking will all be provided. And, of course, prizes for all! Buon viaggio!

New York, New York, The World in a City Multicultural- Other,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
You don't have to travel great distances to see the world. New York's five boroughs are a microcosm of the nationalities of the world. The program is a Powerpoint travelogue of New York City's ethnic neighborhoods, including cultural attractions, itineraries, restaurants, markets and accomodations. The focus is on the food of each culture. It is highly interactive, with questions and prizes throughout. The tone is light-hearted, and the audience is encouraged to comment and have fun!

Garden Getaways II Nature- Gardening
Whatever the season, a garden holds that season’s best display of nature’s beauty. The first vivid buds and blossoms of spring, the vibrant deep colors of a summer garden, the riot of rusts, oranges, and reds in the fall, and the stark patterns of tree branches against the sky in winter. If you’ve “traveled” with me before, you’ve seen 10 gardens at their spring and summer-flowering best. This time we’ll visit 10 new gardens as well as revisiting several of those you’ve seen, now in their autumn and winter beauty. You’ll take home comprehensive information about the 35 public gardens in the immediate New York area, and discover the best restaurants and other attractions close to those gardens we "visit". Prizes will be awarded and all garden lovers are invited!
