Did you know that plants can grow from cuttings and not just seeds? Would you like to learn how to graft scions and choose root stocks? What hormonal treatments or media should be used to encourage growth, and what is the science behind it? Maybe you do not possess a green thumb, but always dreamed of having a beautiful garden. This program will inspire young and old alike to collect coleus, jade, violet, and other easy to propagate plants, and dive into citrus and other exotics to enrich their lives and give everyone the opportunity to grow an amazing garden. Participants may bring home cuttings and seeds to sow at home or in the vacant lot next door.

Sugaring Off - Making Maple Syrup Life Skills- Food,

Learn how to tap maple trees properly, different methods with pros and cons. How to store and process sap, measure brix, and grade maple products. Science of sugar discussed, with chemistry. Best of all, live demonstration with partially boiled sap to reduce waiting time, kids can watch syrup finish and taste when cool as sugar on snow. May be done any time of year, ice shavings can substitute for snow in summer. Great for 2019 summer reading.

Butterfly Metamorphosis Observation Solarium Nature- Animals,

A large, library grade, decorative table/desk set solarium will be set up in a public location within the library. It will contain host plants, butterfly eggs, and patrons will be encouraged to return to the library regularly ro view the progress of caterpillars, chrysalis hatching, and butterflies within the solarium. This can be replenished as often as desired throughout the season, with the understanding that it takes 5-7 weeks for the life cycle to be complete. The library may choose to keep the solarium for future use or return it at the end of the season for a rebate.

Winterberry farm is a fully operating sustainable farm located in Binghamton, NY. Our animals participate in an on farm petting zoo and have toured several libraries and schools around the state. I bring a miniature horse, sheep, goat, angora rabbit, goose, turkey, chicken, duck, and guinea hen; along with anything else that is new or fits in the trailer. Most of our animals are heritage breeds, there is an explanation of the history of the breed, how the animal benefits the farm, what products come from the animal, and general care and management. Kids can pet the animals learn to handle them. This program is suitable for the 2019 summer reading program.

Silk! Growing and Spinning History,

Learn how to grow silk worms in a sustainable manner, and to spin real silk cocoons into thread. The cultural heritage of silk, the trade routes, and unique properties of the fabric will be discussed. Products made from silk will be covered, as well as host plant propogation and larval care practices. Suitable for the 2019 summer reading program.

Laura Ingalls Day Life Skills- Food,

Laura Ingalls Day is a compilation of programs normally taught in a 1 hour block, designed for a kickoff or finale to summer reading, or an event that will bring in patrons during the winter. Starting with sugaring off, we will make sugar on snow, then move onto fresh butter, cheese, and sourdough bread. Next we will plant a garden on the library grounds or start transplants for growing on the windowsill. We can wash up with home made old fashioned lye soap, and hand dip candles. Wrap it all up by meeting farm animals and learning to care for them just like Laura and Mary. Based on book: Little House in the Big Woods, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this program can incorporate reading the book and eating between stations. The program can last 4-8 hours, depending on age group and individual or combinations of stations. Great for the 2019 summer reading program.

This program is an introduction to the art of dressage, as performed by the Spanish Riding School and Lippizaner Stallions of Austria. Participants will learn dance moves that mimick the moves of the horses, and can practice them in a simulated dressage arena. They will learn moves such as the side pass, pirouette, flying changes, piaffe and passage. The history of the art will be taught using Margeurite Henry's book: The White Stallion of Lippiza. Students will be allowed to perform a KUR using classical music at the end of the program. Dressage is the art of teaching horses to dance in harmony with themselves. It was originally developed by the Greek General Xenophon, as a means to train horses for war. Today it is performed both as an Olympic sport in the summer games and by those who wish to train their horses in the higher arts. The class will be conducted as a ballet class in a flat open area of the library. This program is suitable for the 2019 summer reading program.

Angora rabbits provide the softest fiber for spinning, and enjoy being groomed to remove their long continuously growing coats. After making their very own drop spindle, patrons get to brush rabbits to collect fiber. Then they can spin the softest yarn for themselves and bring it home. Learn proper rabbit care and maintenance, along with information on how to manage your own angora rabbit farm. This program is suitable for summer reading 2019.

Welcome to the world of horses! Children and adults alike are fascinated by these majestic creatures, and the experiences with them can be magical! Spending time around horses and ponies has been proven in many studies to be therapeutic on many levels both physically and emotionally. The bond can be quite powerful and healing, but where to start? It is important to know the nature of a horse, how to properly handle them on the ground as well as while riding. Proper care and feeding, tack fitting, and maintenance will be discussed as well. This is all taught out of the American Association for Horsemanship Safety manual by Jan Dawson. Katie, our real life miniature horse will be available to be pet, groomed, and for demonstration of safety techniques. This program is suitable for the 2019 summer reading program.

The Great Space Race History,

This program utilizes a floor size game format to learn about space and to explore the many components of what makes up the universe. It is suitable for young children and fosters curiosity about constellations, planets, and galaxies. A portion of the program is devoted to the history of the race to space between Russia and the United States, and where we are today in NASA development.
