Propaganda of the Axis - The Other Side of WWII as Seen Through the Eyes of the Enemy History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
Here is the third and perhaps best entry on my long running War & Cinema series. This time out we explore WWII as seen through the eyes of the Japanese, Italian and German perspective. We do this by looking at their propaganda; exploring newsreels, cartoons, and various other forms of "entertainment" designed to keep their public actively involved in the war effort, and of course extolling the virtues of their causes. Whether it be the "Die for your Country" cries of the Japanese, or the "inspire your nation into unity that will obey" slogan of Italian Fascism, or the xenophobic warnings of "imperialist invaders ruining the purity of race" extolled by the Germans, this program is the ultimate examination of what our enemies were thinking during WWII.
$101- $200
CHARLES CHAPLIN - The Little Tramp and Lots of Laughs History,
Media- Film,
Media- Other
Who can dare book a comedy seminar without featuring the king of comedy himself, Charles Chaplin. The man who said; A day without a laugh is a wasted day, Charles Chaplin was the crown prince of silent film comedy, and one of the few men who continued his career into the sound pictures with remarkable style and wit. With a look unique only to himself, Chaplin created the sympathetic comic hero, his tramp persona a creation of his out of the real life poverty and misery he experienced as a child in England. A fantastic 60 minute program that features a showing of one of his classic silent comedies (Program Directors choice of The Cure (1917), The Immigrant (1917) or Easy Street (1917). Or watch all three and make it a longer program). Presented in Super 8mm format.
$101- $200
ARTFUL VISCERA - An Exploration of the Italian Horror film 1960 through 1980 History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Other
The Italians reinvented the horror film between 1960 and 1980. Generally, the genre was frowned upon by the fascist movement of the 1930's, but once the war ended and Italy had a chance to get back on their feet, they ended up making up for lost time by producing some of the most frightening films ever to grace a movie theater screen. From the trend setting work of directors like Mario Bava (Black Sunday) to the misanthropic nightmares of Lucio Fulci (Zombie), Italian horror films continue to place their mark on the current crop of American made nightmare films. Join me for the ultimate history lesson on European trash cinema. Comes complete with a vintage memorabilia presentation plus a 16mm showing of a digest version of Horror Castle (1963). This program would be very popular with your younger teenage and college years patrons.
$101- $200
Red Storm Rising: Hollywood at War with Itself History,
Media- Film,
Media- Other
At the height of the Red Scare, Hollywood found itself split in half in regards to political accusations and pressure to turn over suspected Communist conspirators. This program focuses on the inner turmoil that divided the Hollywood populace and left scars that still linger to this day. It also paints a vivid portrait of the atmosphere of distrust and paranoia that permeated the period, coupled with some interesting examples of anti-communist propaganda produced by Hollywood at the time. Includes clips from The Beast of Budapest (1958) as well as other memorabilia from the period.
$101- $200
From Gothic Short Story To Cinematic Reality History,
Media- Film,
Media- Other
Here is a killer program for both the enthusiastic reader and the avid cinema goer! Using two examples of classic, Gothic horror literature, Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge”, and Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell Tale Heart”, we explore the power of both mediums, the written word and the cinematic image, and the difficulties encountered in transferring the written word to the big screen! I will be utilizing two Academy Award winning short subjects, Robert Enrico’s 1961 adaption of Owl Creek Bridge, and Jules Dassin’s 1941 adoption of Tell Tale Heart, in showing the translation from pen to projection. This is a 16mm film presentation that includes a movie memorabilia show and a question and answer session. Runs 90 minutes and would make a perfect pre-Halloween show for adults and young adults alike!
$101- $200
Boris and Bela : The Kings of the B's History,
Media- Film,
Visual Arts- Other
Here is a perfect program for the Halloween season. We explore the career of classic Hollywood horror icons Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Although Karloff and Lugosi were rivals in terms of their competing for the meatiest roles in fantasy cinema, their careers often collided for some fantastic collaboration and memorabilia cinematic moments. Be the first on line to hear about the humble beginnings of both performers and their flight to stardom as they essayed the roles they'd both become synonymous with (Lugosi for Dracula and Karloff with Frankenstein). We are going to see film clips as well as a wealth of movie memorabilia to give a fine portrait of two men so long associated with "B" grade pictures who turned the product they starred in to "A" list material. This is a "must do" program!
$101- $200
Santa Claus and the Movies - How the mythical elf of merriment has been presented on the silver screen! History,
Media- Film,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
This is an oddball but fun presentation showing the various depictions of the Santa Claus legend throughout the years. From Miracle on 34th Street to such crazy adaptations of the story such as Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, we'll investigate the history of Santa Claus through both legend and literature and its ultimate incarnation on the screen. This program will be a seasonal must. Loaded with clips of some of the strangest presentations of Santa over the past decades. It's a unique program to say the least.
$101- $200
The Universal History of Horror Part 2: 1940 - 47 History,
Media- Film,
Media- Other
The popular follow-up that includes 45 minutes of Castle Films shorts, The Wolf Man (1940), Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1942), The House of Frankenstein (1944-two shorts), The Mummy’s Tomb (1942), and The Mummy’s Ghost (1944). Plus you get a wealth of movie materials(posters, pressbooks, etc) dating back to the golden days until the present. A two hour program featuring the best action from the golden age of horror, my most requested lecture.
$101- $200
Alfred Hitchcock - Founding Father of the Stalk and Slash Genre: History,
Media- Film,
Visual Arts- Other
Ok, we've already seen programs about the importance of Alfred Hitchcock's output on the history of cinema. However, few people actually realize that Hitchcock was the inventor of what we call "the slasher film," films exemplified by movies such as Halloween (1978) and Friday The 13th (1980). In this program, we'll gain deep insight as we explore Alfred Hitchcock's troubled childhood where his neurosis originated from having been raised in Victorian England, and we'll ascertain how this directly resulted in his inner rage and desires being expressed through such films as The Lodger (1927), Rope (1948), Psycho (1960), Torn Curtain (1966), and Frenzy (1972). We will also examine films that were highly influenced by Hitchcock such as Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1971) and more. Not your typical take on Hitchcock, but rather the turning of a whole new page in the master's career.
$101- $200
HAL ROACH - Hollywood's Hidden King of Comedy Media- Film,
Media- Video,
Performing Arts- Clowning
Hal Roach was certainly a well know producer, but so few realize that this man gave us some of the best comedic acts that Hollywood had to offer. From his humble roots being born to Irish immigrant parents in Elmira NY, to his journey to California to become a successful prospector, Hal Roach himself never envisioned becoming the King of Comedy. But he did, giving us Harold Loyd, Laurel and Hardy, The Little Rascals and so many more. This program focuses on Roach's early career and creative output, and will use 16mm comedy shorts to exemplify Roach's output.
