Davis, Katie Novel and picture book Author-Illustrator Visit! Literature- Creative Writing,
Performing Arts- Literary Artists,
Visual Arts- Drawing
Beginning: How to draw great characters, brainstorm, and create a ‘voice’ for characters. Middle: Kids interactively establish plot, setting, and conflict. End: Children edit and re-write the story and create a resolution! Assemblies: Katie teaches story construction, sequencing, how ideas transform from thought to published book. Kids learn to do drawings of emotions, Katie shares her mistakes, and teaches skills students can use when creating their own stories. K-3: Highly interactive: children help write a story; volunteers make different emotional expressions. Katie draws their faces on the characters and together they create a new narrative with emphasis on beginning, middle and end. 4-6: Workshops: brainstorming, plotting, descriptive narrative, and character development. Illustration: teaches kids HOW TO SEE so they’re able to illustrate any story they write. Dear Katie, I'm usually 'ho-hum' when it comes to author visits. You were one to change my mind! You were...the best ever writing session, and I truly mean it! Jayne Pitt, K teacher

Company, Hampstead Stage Beauty and the Beast Performing Arts- Theater
Beauty and the Beast is a classic French tale that tells the story of a young girl, Belle, who is sent by her father to live in a beautiful palace with an outwardly terrifying beast. The Beast must help Belle to discover his inner beauty and to help her to break the spell that has kept him locked in his beastly state. This story explores themes of family, sacrifice, trust, and love. Our interactive educational tours run year-round and are performed by two professional actors, each playing multiple roles. Our scripts are original adaptations, based directly on literary classics, and include children and adults from the audience. The plays last one hour, with a question and answer session following the performance. We travel to your space and bring our own realistic sets and costumes, designed using extensive historical research, which are flexible enough to fit into any assembly/performance space.

Edgecomb, Diane Join In! History,
Multicultural- Other,
Performing Arts- Storytelling
Join In and travel around the world with these captivating multi-cultural legends. Each tale offers a participatory look at our common love of story. Celebrate engaging narratives, animal characters, songs in different languages and home-spun wisdom as one of New England’s favorite storytellers takes us from the heart of the Amazon rainforest to the villages of Africa on the wings of story, rhythm and song. “My family was at your amazing performance of “Join In” yesterday. It’s amazing how you bring together many aspects of art and present them for kids so they use their imagination to “see” all the characters you’re talking, dancing and singing about. Personally, I was very happy with your folktales about the rainforests. I’m from Brazil where we have a rich heritage from Africa and we live in the US where my son was born. We loved to hear “O Pião entrou na roda, ó pião! Roda pião, bambeia pião!”. I used to sing this song myself when I was kid. It was delightful. :~)” ~Marcia, Linden School, Malden, MA
