This lively concert highlights and celebrates the multicultural stew that is America. The Hill Brothers combine fun songs from Russia, Africa, Ireland, Mexico and more (many of which students will know) with loads of audience participation to celebrate the diversity of cultures in our country, and in our own communities. The perfect complement to multicultural and diversity programs, immigration studies, international/ethnic/world communities themes, American themes and Music in the Schools Month.

This concert for children of all ages and their families features songs Cathy learned from family and tradition, as well as poems, stories, dancing games and jig tunes. Expect lots of participation: sing and dance like leprechauns, and exercise your imagination and your feet. An experienced folk music performer and founding member of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Rochester NY branch (www.irishrochester.org), a 2016 inductee into the CCE Irish Music Hall of Fame for the Northeast US, and member of Rochester Sister Cities’ Musical Delegation to Waterford, Ireland 2010, Cathy uses guitar, penny whistle, flute, bodhrán (Irish drum) and limberjacks to bring Irish music to life.

Kass, Barry Ancient Civilizations of the Mediterranean: the Minoans, Mycenaeans, and classical Greeks History,

Through his beautiful photographs, Anthropologist-Photographer Barry Kass will take the audience on a journey back in time to the Aegean and the land of the ancient Minoans, Mycenaeans, and the classical Greeks, the founders of Western Civilization. We will explore the fortress of Mycenae, the Minoan palace of Knossos on the Island of Crete, and the magnificent sites of classical Greece, including Athens and the Parthenon, Olympia, Delphi, Corinth, the theater of Epidaurus, as well as the great Grecian cities of Asia Minor, including Miletus, Pergamon, Ephesus, Priene, Didyma, and Troy of Homeric legend, will be illustrated and described.

Fiske, David Kidnapped: Black New Yorkers Caught in the Slave Trade History,

Under slavery, it was not only the slaves who suffered. Free blacks were at risk of being kidnapped and sold as slaves. Once they were taken to a slave state, chances of their returning home were small. Several New Yorkers, from various parts of the state, were rescued from slavery, and their kidnappers were held accountable for their deeds. This presentation will tell their stories. Fiske is a co-author of Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave. Great Black History topic!

This is a up-close, interactive concert that includes aires, dance tunes, and singalongs from a variety of immigrant traditions, accompanied by Irish harp, bagpipes, pennywhistle, French hurdy gurdy, German hackbrett (hammered dulcimer), African-American banjo, and English squeezeboxes... our music offers the special flavor of each culture's unique contributions.

A Tour of World Flutes with Tereasa Payne Tereasa Payne, flutist, world-flutist, and woodwinds player, from NYC presents a program of 15 flutes from around the world. Audiences learn about and hear flutes from around the world while also learning a message about diversity and acceptance. Flutes included are from India, Romania, South America, Africa, Hawaii, Japan, China, Cambodia, and more! Tereasa is a regular performer with Disney’s “The Lion King” where she performs on 13 of these flutes from around the world.

Tim has worked extensively with young children in school residencies and programs for family centers and libraries. He's also led workshops for teachers and assistants as well as fellow performers and teaching artists. Tim Van Egmond has been delighting and captivating audiences all over the country for over 30 years. He has been selected for the New England States Touring Program, the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Education Programs, and the New Hampshire State Library's Kids, Books, and the Arts Project.

Asia has a rich history in bookbinding unique from the rest of the world. Learn about the evolution of the book in Asia, including the spread of the art from China to Japan, Korea, and the rest of the world, in this lecture/presentation. Handmade historical replicas and modern interpretations of each bookbinding style will be available for handling, as well as some handmade materials like mulberry paper and special handmade printed papers from different countries in Asia.
