Gothic Romance is a literary style that was popular in the late 18th through the 19th century. They were mysteries and usually set against dark backgrounds of medieval ruins and haunted castles. The heroines are spirited young women who go to live in large gloomy mansions presided over by darkly handsome men with mysterious pasts. Rita Parisi presents in her theatrical storytelling style three Gothic Romance Tales by Kate Chopin, Emily Bronte and Louisa May Alcott. This program can be held as a one-day workshop or mulitple-session residency. I teache the beginning skills needed to create and develop a graphic novel or short story. Drawing skills, story telling skills, creative writing and visual story boarding are taught. Age 12 and up mandatory for this program. A great way to get teens and especially teen boys to visit your library!

The drawing game Pictionary is mashed-up with Relay racing. Teams play against each other drawing a "round of 12 cards". The typical "all play" category found in original Pictionary is replaced with current popular books, and their characters; the other normal categories of objects, places, celebrities, verbs are also played. The players hand-off the marker as a baton- and the first team to guess all their cards each round wins. Call for more info- as this one is a little involved rule-wise. losing team each round will have to perform some sort of physical exercise (jumping jacks, etc.). Team that wins the most "rounds" of play wins.

Fiske, David Rescued from Slavery: The Story of Solomon Northup History,

Solomon Northup was a free black man living in New York State. In 1841 he was lured away from home and sold as a slave. For nearly twelve years, he was a slave in Louisiana. Finally he was able to get a message to friends in New York, and he was able to return home as a free man. After writing a book about his experiences, he traveled around the Northeast giving speeches, and even helped fugitive slaves get to Canada thanks to his work on the Underground Railroad. Mr. Fiske wrote Solomon Northup: His Life Before and After Slavery, and is a co-author of Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave. This is a great Black History topic!
