Captain Bill effectively delivers the message to elementary grades K through 6 as he educates and entertains. Throughout the show, Captain Bill uses fun, laughter, excitement and surprise to reinforce each of the 8 Big Ideas: Be a Friend, Be Responsible, Believe in Yourself, Help Others, Play Fair, Share with Others, Have Tolerance for Others and Work Together. To close the show, Captain Bill and some treasure hunters from the audience magically discover an old map that leads them to a treasure chest hidden on the island many years before. Legend says the chest contains a valuable treasure. Is it gold, silver, diamonds, pearls or money? The visitors to the island are the only ones who can discover the secret. Maichack, Mary Jo (and Gregory) How to Tell a Story Workshop Literature- Other,
Performing Arts- Storytelling,
Performing Arts- Theater
Mary Jo, a vet of some 3-4,000 storytelling shows & workshops in libraries, schools, on hay bales and lovely national stages in regional storytelling festivals, (more than 30 years' full-time professional expertise) engages family audiences so that they learn how to tell short folktales, easily and with fun and confidence. Mary Jo has learned to tell and teach simultaneously, so participants are immediately actively telling tales, for example, "Why Thumb Lives Apart from the Quarreling Fingers," which uses the fingers and thumb as characters. It's funny and memorable, and repeats so kids can tell it on their own almost immediately. Because there is both gesture and spoken word, the gestures become cues--very empowering! Emphasis is on relaxed, positive-only fun and funny tales to "take home." Kids to adults can enjoy this.
