Edgecomb, Diane Insect Comedy Nature- Other,
Performing Arts- Storytelling,
Science
Insect Comedy takes a delightful look at our Six-legged friends. In Princess Firefly entertaining facts are served up along with plenty of silliness as the Princess ponders, “Who will be the bug I will love?” Kate's Acorn, one of Diane's original stories, teaches about the importance of soil creatures in the life cycle of plants. And in another backyard tale we learn about when to keep or let insects go. Diane's hilarious interpretations of Mr. Mosquito, Mr. Gnat, Old King Lampyradie Beetle keep us laughing as we take a closer look at the world of insects. "From the Academy's point of view, the storytelling could not have worked better as a public program. The stories you told, captivated and fascinated our audience. I was impressed that they would not let you leave the stage without an encore performance. Diane your storytelling is fantastic!" Linda Wolf, Public Programs Coordinator, The Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, PA

Imagine a magical balloon that knows when and how to touch down in the most exotic places right in the middle of a story, just at the most important moment. This is the invention of Professor Pennywhistle, whose curiosity and enthusiasm about exploring the world takes him - and us - to the most surprising places. It's a celebration of diversity - and more important - the common things that people share all around the globe. We'll visit the arid landscape of Africa, where the animals must remember the name of a tree that will drop its fruit only if they can shout it out loud; the Palace of the Emperor of China, who has lost his best friend - a nightingale - and doesn't know what to do; a little cottage in the woods of France, where an elderly woman learns the secret of a soup made from only a stone. And finally, we'll return to the good old U.S.A. and meet Pecos Bill, America's first cowboy, and help him lasso a wild tornado. We live in a big, wide, wonderful world, and Professor Pennywhistle is more than happy to be our tour guide.

Beauty and the Beast is a classic French tale that tells the story of a young girl, Belle, who is sent by her father to live in a beautiful palace with an outwardly terrifying beast. The Beast must help Belle to discover his inner beauty and to help her to break the spell that has kept him locked in his beastly state. This story explores themes of family, sacrifice, trust, and love. Our interactive educational tours run year-round and are performed by two professional actors, each playing multiple roles. Our scripts are original adaptations, based directly on literary classics, and include children and adults from the audience. The plays last one hour, with a question and answer session following the performance.
