Deb Cavanau8gh has been a performer and teacher for over 40 years. This music program, specially written to compliment the 2019 Summer Reading Program theme, A Universe of Stories, travels the known universe in songs from different cultures in those languages including creative movement and dance. Then, we will travel into space singing songs about stars and planets, returning to our own planet earth for a finale. Included in the program will be percussion instruments for the participants to play, traditional American instruments (mountain dulcimer and limberjack) and a crankie, a traditional American folk art. An interactive program using songs and movement to promote community building and working together to improve everyone's lives. Songs such as Ruth Pelham's We're All a Family Under One Sky and Malvina Reynolds' We Live in the City celebrate diversity and unity. We will also sing songs in other languages and incorporate folk dance into this unique program for children from preschool up through middle school. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend. This program can be adapted for a variety of ages.

The tradition of the storyteller crosses all cultures. Everyone joins in, calling forth the story in the ways of many lands. We hear tales from everywhere: a Lakota fable with animal sages, a Hasidic tale of love, the journey of a sassy cat in search of a mate from Zimbabe, a Hispanic trickster tale where grandmother lovingly outwits death himself. Sing-along songs with easy movement get everyone involved as we travel afar and feel at home together. Wherever Carole tells story she creates community. The program is adapted to the needs of the group and its participants. Carole Forman has performed story programs around the U.S. and Canada for audiences of all ages. A professional actress, (on Broadway once), she has the ability to engage her audience and get them involved. Wherever Carole tells story she creates community.

Did you ever wonder while either reading manga or watching anime you have been puzzled by some aspect of Japanese culture that you thought to be very odd or strange? This panel will try to educate on what the hell is going on! Major topics for this presentation will include: fear of the "gaijin" invader, the strange and wonderful Japanese writing system, school uniforms, the sempai-kohai relationship, why are the Japanese so polite, the meaning of the use of certain colors, giant transforming robots, living in the post apocalypse and more. Hopefully, after attending this panel you might want to learn more about Japanese culture! So join us for facts and fun! Free snacks will be provided!

Learn what distinguishes the black teas of China from black teas in other countries, specific health benefits associated with black tea, and the history and lore surrounding the teas being tasted. Three Chinese black teas will be tasted and discussed.

Highlights of major periods of music history, noteworthy composers and their contributions, instrumentation, stylistic technique of the composer (all preceded by an introduction to basic music theory to facilitate understanding the terms) as well as brief viewing and commentary on major art of period and how each influenced the other. Major periods: Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern (1890-)to 20th Century as time permits. Handouts of timelines are provided, along with instructor's notes. A projector is needed for viewing. Instructor brings lap top. The content is targeted to high school age and adults.

The cultural heritage of silk, the trade routes, and unique properties of the fabric will be discussed.
