Program description: Long before the arrival of the Europeans, the native peoples of the Americas created impressive urban civilizations characterized by such advancements as the invention of writing and mathematics, a calendar system very different from the western Gregorian calendar, the construction of huge cities replete with massive temples and pyramids, complex political states, and a pantheon of gods often thirsty for human blood and sacrifice. Anthropologist-Photographer Barry Kass' excellent photographs and descriptions will take the audience on a journey of exploration to the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations of the Olmecs, Zapotecs, Mayans and the Aztecs. We will visit such famous sites as Chichen Itza, Palenque, and Teotihucan in Mexico, Copan in Honduras, Altun Ha in Belize, and Tikal in Guatemala.
